Detroit: Soul Skate 2018
Music lovers, skate novices and slick wheeled skaters behold. Detroit’s very own roller disco party, Soul Skate, is gearing up for round 7, (if you don’t count the rare London version from 2010). Roller Discos have played an important role in Detroit’s cultural and political history, and Soul Skate is living proof of that continued legacy. The biannual event, presented by Moodymann and Mahogani, has been running since 2007. Over the years it has grown to attract an international following, or as Moodymann puts it: “a social gathering without social media” – four days of bringing the world together for a global confluence of music and skate culture, as it states on the Soul Skate website. Running from May 24th until May 27th with several events at different locations spread throughout and around the city of Detroit, the main event will take place at Northland Roller Rink on Saturday, May 26th with DJ Narsistic and DJ Arson playing, followed by the infamous Adult Prom at the same location on Sunday May 27th. “Who is going to be our surprise artist this year at the Prom,” teased the Soul Skate organizers recently, having previously unleashed past surprise appearances from the likes of rapper Rakim and DJ-legend Louie Vega. Come and enjoy the ride at this year’s Soul Skate with Carhartt Work In Progress.
