London: Soul Skate Documentary Opening Night
Carhartt WIP, NTS Radio and Dazed have teamed up to present "Soul Skate 2018", a documentary on the infamous biannual Detroit based Soul Skate party, directed by upcoming British film director Ramone Anderson.
Running for over a decade, the party and movement was founded in 2007 by Detroit natives Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann and Tracy Washington with the aim of giving contemporary skate culture a new home. Roller Discos have played an important role in Detroit’s cultural and political history, and Soul Skate is living proof of that continued legacy. Over the years it has grown to attract an international following, or as Moodymann puts it: “a social gathering without social media” – four days of bringing the world together for a global confluence of music and skate culture, as it states on the Soul Skate website.
For this year's edition number seven (if you don’t count the rare London version from 2010), again music lovers, skate novices and slick wheeled skaters from all around the globe came to Detroit to celebrate Soul Skate. Carhartt WIP, Dazed and NTS joined the rolling sensation and sent Ramone Anderson to capture it in a documentary that gives an intimate glimpse into a tight-knit global community, brought together by music.
You can catch the London premiere of Soul Skate at the Rio Cinema in Dalston, London on Tuesday 23rd October, 20:00 - 21:30, with the screening at 20:15. Space is limited, so RSVP by emailing carharttwip@aipr.co.uk
