Over the coming weeks, we’ll be revisiting our favorite Carhartt WIP Radio shows since the platform launched in 2008, highlighting special moments from our ongoing program. What follows is a little insight on the second three Carhartt WIP Rewind editions. Enjoy.
Carhartt WIP Radio April 2014: Suzi Horn - DFA Radio Show
UK-based post-punk duo Prinzhorn Dance School – consisting of singer and guitar player Tobin Prinz and bass player and singer Suzi Horn – presents a ride through the catalog of their beloved DFA Records, the New York label globally known for artists such as The Rapture, Hercules & Love Affair, and LCD Soundsystem. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Suzi Horn prepared a DFA mix featuring music by the likes of Holy Ghost!, Le Tigre, and Radio 4, as well as some catchy Prinzhorn Dance School material.
Carhartt WIP Radio March 2016: Andrés - KDJ & Mahogani Music Radio Show
In 2016, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomed Andrés, the multi-faceted, Detroit-based DJ, drummer, percussionist, and producer, who is perhaps best known for his work with Slum Village and J Dilla. This show’s release accompanied a small capsule collection, created in collaboration with Detroit’s finest Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann. Fittingly, Andrés prepared a mix that playfully maps out the catalogs of Moodymann's labels, KDJ and Mahogani Music, spotlighting Moodymann classics like “I Got Werk” and “Shades Of Jae”, as well as a gentle sprinkling of Andrés productions like “Love Hurts” and “Salvador de Bahia”.
Carhartt WIP Radio September 2013: Awesome Tapes From Africa - Radio Show
Since 2006 Brian Shimkovitz has disseminated undiscovered taped treasures from the African continent, through his cult-blog Awesome Tapes From Africa. In 2011, he launched a label by the same name, bringing the unique work of artists such as Ethiopian organ and synth player Hailu Mergia and Ghana-based DJ and producer DJ Katapila, to a global audience. In late 2013, Shimkovitz introduced more unheard music on Carhartt WIP Radio, bringing a slew of eclectic sounds, from Hiplife Gyil and Highlife tunes to tracks that skewed in a variety of directions – traditional, Pop, and electronic.
